Bedford Township Treasurer's Office

Sherri S. Meyer, CMFA
Mission Statement
The Township Treasurer must carry out responsibilities in various monetary areas important to the efficient fiscal operation of Township government. The MISSION of the Treasurer is to be responsive to the needs of the public and maintain a staff that is knowledgeable, helpful, and courteous. In doing so, the needs of the public can be answered in a prompt and efficient manner.
Responsibilities
The primary responsibility of the Treasurer is the collection of property taxes. Bedford's tax roll is over $ 17 million. We handle over 11,500 tax bills. The tax bills are printed the second week in November and mailed by the beginning of December. Collections are made from December 1st through the end of February . The tax roll is settled with the County Treasurer by the middle of March. When the taxes are collected, they must be disbursed every other Friday to each school district, (Bedford, Mason, and Ida) as well as the County, State, Community College, ISD, and the other entities we collect for. All of the daily collections and deposits must be balanced before they can be disbursed. The Treasurer is also responsible for the collection of Personal Property Taxes. These are taxes paid by businesses on the equipment they have in their establishments.

One of the other important responsibilities of the Treasurer is to serve as a member of the Township Board. As a result, much time is spent in talking with the public listening to their needs and concerns. In connection with being a Board member, the Treasurer serves as liaison to many other Township Committees and Commissions.

It is imperative that the Township Treasurer maintain accurate records of all income, receipts, and disbursements. In addition, deposits are promptly recorded and any excess funds are invested in secure, interest bearing instruments which are outlined in the Township Investment Policy. By law the Township must have a written Investment Policy.

By statue the Treasurer is custodian of all monies belonging to the Township. The Treasurer must provide a system of checks and balances in the financial affairs with sound cash management practices being constantly followed. Every dollar earned in interest is important revenue to our budget. Monthly reports are given to the Township Board indicating all investment balances. The Board members also receive a monthly "Approved Payment Report" showing all the checks that were written and are to be written for the month. All financial records are audited annually by an independent Certified Public Accounting firm.
Under the Treasurer's direct supervision are the Deputy Treasurer, the Utilities Clerk, and two seasonal workers. We work as a team to maintain a high level of service. Other services offered through the Treasurer's Department are:
1. Sewer and Water bill payments.

2. Sewer and Water Tap permits.

3. Maps - Township ($1.00); County ($1.00); State (Free).

4. The sale of BFI trash bags and yard waste tags.

5. Dog license applications. These must be mailed to Monroe County Animal Control.
The Treasurer's job description and responsibilities are obviously challenging and varied. It does, however, afford experiences unlike any other career. You are rewarded with a sense of satisfaction when the tax roll is balanced and settled and when you are able to solve a taxpayers problem. Call my office if I can be of any assistance to you.
Sincerely,

Sherri S. Meyer
